I would dearly love a house with tall ceilings and a swing, right in the middle of everything. I would do all my thinking and daydreaming right there. I might ask DJ for a push. I think he wouldn’t mind, if I let him swing now and then.

I’m nursing a headcold today, working on Nearly White #2 and giving myself a manicure. Ordinarily I wouldn’t have much to say about the manicure - I blame the headcold.

I’m not a big fan of nail salons. The tools always squick me out a little bit. Did you sterilize that? Really? Show me. Plus I keep my nails short and can’t stand chipped polish, so it’s really not worth the $15. But every so often I swipe on a coat of something shiny. Then I get impatient and smudge it before it’s completely dry. Or find a chip a day later; I’ve more than once scrubbed off polish in the bathroom at work with one of those acetone-soaked felt pads.

Until a few months ago, when I bought a bottle of Creative Nail Design Air Dry clear topcoat. It’s changed my nail-polishing life. (Really.) I never used to wear polish more than two days in a row, now I can go four or five without chipping. And it dries everything really fast, fast enough that you can wear socks ten minutes after a pedicure. Fast enough that you can do a quick manicure in a parking lot right before your wedding. True story.

In real life I have naturally big hair. I like it that way. It seems like a big veil is just the wedding day equivalent, right? I’m so talking myself into it.

There isn’t going to be a denouement to the dress story, LPC. I can’t show you the dress, at least not for about six months. Part of the deal is that I’m to be more traditional about The Dress than I had been previously, and DJ reads this blog now and then.

But I can show you this awesome photo of a veil, which really has no relationship to my dress whatsoever. I would like to wear a veil that big, but maybe not for the eventual wedding. Maybe just around the house and to the grocery store.

I’m a little bit afraid that my candle-lighting helpers are going to off me after the wedding. In addition to the many (many) votives for the barn beams and tables, I’d like to light the bannisters to the balcony. (Hay loft?)

Here’s one level of the bannister. There’s another where the photographer is standing. I like the light aspect of the Christmas lights, but I’m not a big fan of Christmas lights at any time but Christmas. And no, you cannot convince me that they’re “fairy lights.” Those are different.

So, more candles? I really like this, with the different jars and lipped votive holders.

And these, which might be baby food jars. Did you know that you can buy clean, empty baby food jars on eBay? Seriously, someone will sell you anything there. Incredible.

I’m not sure how to attach them to the bannister, though. Giant twist-ties? Ribbon? Pipe cleaners? (Of course you remember pipe cleaners.) I am less concerned with the aesthetics of attachment than I am with my bridesmaids not killing me before the honeymoon, so I’d have to choose ease over beauty if there’s a choice to be made.

cautionary tale

It started innocently enough. I saw a picture on Style Me Pretty, and – well – thought it was pretty.

So I forwarded it to Bridesmaid Chloe, who is getting married on New Year’s Eve and hasn’t settled on a bridesmaid look yet, although until today we both thought she was fairly close. We’ve had a lot of conversations about bridesmaid dresses, so I’ll admit I was stirring the pot.
Perhaps because I really want to wear a long silk skirt for something.
But then I couldn’t actually find the skirts (pleating, sashes, swoon!) for sale anywhere, and this is where a reasonable person would have given up. The thing is, I’m not known for being reasonable.

So I suggested that we sew them, and provided a link to reasonably priced rainbows of silk fabric. Now she may very well end up sewing four skirts (I’ll make at least two of the six, I’m not heartless) and vetting white blouses. I’m pretty sure that this was not quite the sort of help I was meant to offer when she asked me to be in her wedding.

I think that this photo came from the Bride’s Cafe, but I’m not sure and now can’t re-find it. It’s been sitting on my hard drive for some time, clipped because I like the puffy gathers. I also like the lace, but is it a bit too-too? I’ve lost perspective on these things, weddings seems to encourage my over the top tendencies.

Originally I thought of using this for cocktail tables, but now I don’t think we’ll need them. I also didn’t think we’d have a head table, but now that seems like the best use of the space we have. The rest of the rectangular tables will be bare distressed wood with natural muslin runners. We could do the same on the head table, but the girls will be wearing knee-length skirts. From straight on, a tablecloth would look more finished in pictures and make them worry less about crossing their ankles. (My grandma always says that a lady crosses her ankles – crossing at the knee is acceptable, but not as flattering. She’s crazy, but I believe she may be right.)

I don’t mind the head table being different, and since I haven’t sewn the runners yet I might be able to echo the gathers there as well. It just occurred to me that the tables look like wedding gowns a little bit. Funny, since my dress is as plain as can be.
