An Extraordinary Saturday: Rain and a Rickrolled Rehearsal
The week before the wedding it rained. And rained and rained. By Friday I was absolutely sure we’d be having the ceremony indoors. We’d planned to rehearse in DJ’s parents’ backyard, but the rain chased us inside. Fortunately no one seemed to mind.

The rain was coming down in sheets, which turned my forty-minute drive into nearly two hours. Everyone was late to the rehearsal, including and especially me. I hate being late, it makes me nervous. I was nervous. My DOC(plus) from Anticipation Events, Elizabeth, called to say she was late too, after three hours in traffic - she still got there before I did. With a smile, which reminded me to chill.

She also gave me a short pep talk that made me feel better about everyone looking at me, the state of the many DIY projects, and my hair. That conversation made me wish I had a DOC for my whole life.

Playing with DJ’s parents’ Yorkie calmed me down a little. He’s enormous, for a Yorkie. He reminds everyone of Toto from The Wizard of Oz.

I wasn’t planning on saying much about the rehearsal, but then this happened. We’d asked the couple on the left to read letters we’d written to each other as part of the ceremony – but hadn’t given them the letters yet. So they Rickrolled our rehearsal. Oh, 2008. You were a good year.
The best part was that later, my mom said how very sweet their reading selection had been. How appropriate, how thoughtful. Oh, mom. Never ever change!

Then we were married! Wait, no. Then we were ready for pizza.

DJ’s dad gave a funny, sweet, and embarassing toast. It was perfect.

Don’t mind me, I’m just turning purple from embarassment over here.

That day happened to be his birthday, and Bridesmaid Chloe’s birthday. When we set the date I was very concerned that their birthdays would go uncelebrated. Also, cake is very important to me, ask anyone. So I baked a cake for each of them.

It actually wasn’t as hard to pull off as I thought it would be. I baked the layers the weekend before and froze them. Coconut cream for DJ’s dad, chocolate and whiskey with cherry filling for Chloe. The day of the rehearsal I made frosting and put the cakes together. Photographer Kim ended up carrying them to the rehearsal and helping DJ set them up, because by that point I was practically useless from excitement and nerves.
What if my dress wouldn’t zip? What if I fell? What if everyone stayed home? Something always goes wrong, right?

These pictures are fabulous. I was an hour late to our rehearsal. Why? Because the Best Man, who’d volunteered to drive me and one of my out-of-town bridesmaids while Mr. Spy picked up his mother, got lost. And stuck in traffic. They were just about to kick us out of the church when we got there. Our rehearsal dinner was a birthday party too — it was my brother’s birthday that day. Funny. I can’t wait to see more pictures.
Hehehehehe. We also crack ourselves up.
I think the Friday of your rehearsal may have been the Friday of my wedding. It rained buckets! Oh, and I’m intrigued by this chocolate and whiskey cake with cherry filling — please share!
Emily, I will. I might have to make it again and take pictures this time – I only about halfway used a recipe the first time!
So clever. And so gorgeous.
Those cakes sound fabulous. And the picture of the Yorkie playing with your rehearsal bouquet cracks me up. (He really is big for a Yorkie!)
