handmade quilts
One of my domestic dreams is a stack of near-white handmade quilts, fraying and soft with wear. I made one a few years ago for our guest bed, a large scale log cabin design based on Joelle Hoverson’s apartment profile in now-defunct Blueprint.
I loved her soft palette, and the simplicity of the design appealed to me as a quilting newbie.

Mine (above) was machine-pieced but handquilted and hand-bound. I believe Joelle machine quilted hers or had it done, which I haven’t really tried. I know my sewing machine isn’t up to the task, and I enjoy the process of quilting by hand.

I’d like something along the same lines for my second quilt, but this time I’m inspired by Alicia Paulson’s Ollalieberry quilt. The simple squares are appealing to me right now. I’m leaning towards creamy neutrals again, made in a repeating ninepatch for visual neatness. Hand quilted again, outlining the squares.
I debated between another neutral palette and something like Inchmark’s dress shirt quilt. The neutrals won for the moment, but maybe next year. Maybe I’ll thrift some cream and tan shirts…

Really pretty quilts. Sometimes those soft dreamy neutrals are just what you want for serenity.
